Music Therapy for Kids with IEP Goals

Music Therapy can improve overall outcomes in child development. This includes:

  • Speech and Communication

  • Neurodevelopment

  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills

  • Self Esteem & Emotional Wellbeing

Music therapy can integrate these goals from speech therapy, physical therapy, pediatricians, neurologists, and teachers. We work as a team with other professionals to accelerate and optimize growth. Kids learn best in environments where they can feel safe and have fun, so we accelerate their growth by connecting with them through music. This can raise their potential for reaching goals later in life, as interventions provided earlier often have the most impact in life-long development.

Who might benefit?

Kids with:

  • Developmental delay

  • Neonatal Alcohol Syndrome

  • Global delays

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • ADHD

  • Down syndrome

  • Cerebral Palsy

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Kids not reaching typical milestones

  • Kids undergoing Speech, Physical, Occupational, or Neurological therapies.

Who wouldn't benefit?

Music therapy isn’t necessary for kids who are reaching typical milestones if they are neurotypical and do not have any medical/developmental needs or diagnoses. We do recommend musical enrichment through exposure to music, singing and dancing at home, child-led instrument exploration/play, and music/instrument classes or tutoring. Note: We recommend that parents and caregivers avoid instruction that prioritizes technical musical skill over play and autonomy for very young children.

When you don’t know how to motivate your child or help them grow, or want to give them more opportunity for joy and play

Are you frustrated with being told milestones your child isn’t reaching, without being given actionable ways to actually motivate your child to practice them? Does your child dislike assigned therapy exercises and resist necessary activities of daily living?

We can help. Music is intrinsically motivating for every human—we have evidence that musicality is an innate evolutionary trait that we all have.

In music therapy, an MT-BC can take that a physical therapy goal and add instruments to reach for or integrate it into a dance move that kids enjoy. We can encourage certain speech sounds through song. We can connect with kids who have a hard time with communication through music, to make them feel seen and understood.
