Music Therapy for Infants
Music Therapy can improve overall outcomes in infant development. This includes:
Speech and communication
Neurodevelopment
Fine and Gross Motor Skills
Increased Feeding and Improved Sleeping
Decreased pain or discomfort
Who might benefit?
Infants with the following, as soon as they are able to live at home:
Infants with developmental delay
Infants with diagnosed or suspected autism
Infants with Down syndrome
Infants with Cerebral Palsy
Infants with traumatic brain injury
Infants not reaching typical milestones
Infants undergoing Speech, Feeding, Physical, Occupational, or Neurological therapies (music therapy can integrate these goals and work as a team with other professionals to accelerate and optimize growth.)
Who wouldn't benefit?
Music therapy isn’t necessary for infants who are reaching typical milestones if they are neurotypical and do not have any medical/developmental needs or diagnoses. We do recommend musical enrichment for infants through exposure to music, singing and dancing at home, child-led instrument exploration/play, and classes with titles such as “mommy and me music” or “music for littles.”
When you don’t know how to motivate your baby or help them grow
Are you frustrated with being told milestones your child isn’t reaching, without being given actionable ways to actually motivate your infant to practice them? Does your baby dislike assigned therapy exercises such as consonant sounds, bringing the hands together, and rolling over?
We can help. Music is intrinsically motivating for every human—we have evidence that musicality is an innate evolutionary trait that we all have. Babies enjoy it; they hum/babble in a melodic way and often dance/move to rhythm before they walk.
In music therapy, an MT-BC can take that a physical therapy goal and add instruments to reach for or integrate it into a dance move that baby enjoys. We can create a musical ritual for you to use at home that increases feeding time. We can create songs that specifically encourage infants to learn and repeat certain consonants or speech sounds.
Why Us?
Many music therapists in private practice have limited experience working with infants. Our founder, Cameron, specializes in providing music therapy for infants with developmental support needs. Cameron is a level 3 practitioner of the Rhythm Breathe and Lullaby method for infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, and has experience in pediatric hospitals supporting soothing and neurodevelopment goals for premature and sick babies. Now, she brings this expertise to babies who are home from the hospital but need continuous support on developmental goals to optimize outcomes.
